About the squadron

A volunteer crew teaching boating on Galveston Bay since 1963.

Galveston Bay Sail & Power Squadron is a nonprofit unit of the United States Power Squadrons®, District 21. We're locally led, nationally affiliated, and built around one idea: for boaters, by boaters.

Our mission

Practical seamanship, modern tools, steady community.

We exist to make Galveston Bay a safer, more enjoyable place to boat. We do that by teaching — boating safety, navigation, seamanship, electronics, weather — and by building a community where new boaters and seasoned skippers learn from each other.

Every member is a volunteer. Every course is taught by a peer who has been on these waters. Every Saturday meeting at Stein Hall is a chance to share what you've learned, ask a question, and plan the next outing.

Setting our course — 2026

Five priorities for the year ahead.

From the Commander's Change of Watch address, February 2026. Each priority is practical, member-led, and measurable — the kind of goals you can put a tick next to at year's end.

Modernize education

Expand participation in safety and navigation courses. Make learning practical, engaging, and accessible. Integrate modern tools while preserving seamanship fundamentals.

Grow membership through connection

Welcome new members and help them connect quickly. Encourage mentorship between experienced and newer boaters. Balance education, camaraderie, and time on the water.

Increase visibility

Expand outreach with public boating-safety education. Strengthen partnerships with local marinas, yacht clubs, and boating organizations across Galveston Bay.

Improve communication

Clear, consistent communication. Accessible volunteer opportunities. More ways for members to share ideas and shape the future of the squadron.

Stewardship of our waters

Galveston Bay gives us so much. Promote clean boating practices and environmental awareness so future generations can experience the freedom we enjoy today.

"We don't need to move fast to move forward — we just need to move together, with purpose."
